It is no longer surprising that studying English in Baguio is becoming a popular choice among ESL Learners because of its global recognition as one of UNESCO’s most creative cities. The rising city offers great learning environment to aspiring ESL students like Nam from Thailand. Read on and check out the highlights of Nam’s ESL learning at Pines Baguio, and this will also give you an idea about studying English abroad.
First Day High
Hi everyone,I’m Nam from Thailand. This is my first time in Baguio City. Upon arrival at Pines Academy , I received a welcome kit containing bottle of water and some snacks.
In retrospect, my first Monday in the academy went like this- I was so psyched to finish the test and attended the freshmen orientation. I had fun because I was given the chance to get to know English learners from countries like Korea, Japan, Taiwan, China, Vietnam and Mongolia. I garnered level 4 under the Power ESL Program on my first month.
I studied with Taiwanese and Korean students. I had 4 sessions of group classes and 4 sessions of one on one classes each day. On the first 2 weeks,I think my English skills improvement couldn’t be measured yet because I believe that language learning takes time , but I felt that my speaking and listening skills have gradually started improving. My teachers were quite good for freshmen like me as they are kind and patient.
I have Japanese,Korean and Mongolian roommates. Our dormitory in main campus is new and clean. Utility staffs clean our room twice a week. There is a big glass window in our bedroom that exposes the beautiful exterior view. So far, I’m happy and I’m enjoying my classes here. The food is good; I get to have three or four courses of meal consisting of soup, meat (or sometimes fish)vegetable and fruits.
Class and Study Environment
I have already been here for a month, and I really enjoy all classes. All teachers do their best. Sometimes when I didn’t understand something , they explain until the idea becomes clear. It was during that time that I could feel my English skill is improving. I felt the need to speak in English everyday to further study and communicate with other people. As a result, I have felt confidence in English speaking, made new friends from different countries and learned more about their culture. We usually eat out on weekends.
Unfortunately,I got sick one time. Im so glad that Pines Nurse took care and brought me to the hospital.I’m happy to study here, because I am well taken care of . Pines manager and staffs give me a hand whenever I’m facing a situation. I celebrated Christmas and New year in the academy. On Christmas day,we held a small party in classroom, played games, ate some snacks and had fun together.
I attended Night Owls Night on the first Friday of 2020 with other students. We participated in educational activities such as spelling bee, grammar check game and there were also fun activities like having a cardio workout with our option class teachers. Teachers gave prizes to winners. The party was not that big but it was very interesting, and I really enjoyed participating in the activities.
Pines students just like me frequently shop at SM Mall on weekends. The mall is just 5-10 minutes away by taxi and is open from 10 AM till 9 PM. It’s also a must to check out Burnham Park that may take 15-minute walk from SM.
There are many activities there that you should never ever miss like biking and boating !
I also went to a famous restaurant in Baguio called “Canto Restaurant” which is just across Burnham Park. I arrived in Canto at around 4pm and there were many people who were eagerly waiting for their food to be served.
I also eagerly waited for 20 minutes and when it was my turn to have my food served I cannot stop smiling . We had Lomo ribs, fish steak and chicken pastel. My favorite among the 3 is Lomo ribs,it’s a kind of tasty and savory pork ribs. Canto Restaurant has a lovely atmosphere.
